Amish Friendship Bread Recipe

February 11, 2012 by 56 Comments

Amish friendship bread is your basic sweetened quick-bread.
My sweet neighbor called me yesterday and asked if I’d like a bag of Amish Friendship bag.  I have had a this bread before, but never made it myself!  The starter bag she passed onto me was on day ten…ready for a few ingredients and then straight into the oven!  Oh my goodness…so GOOD!  And there are so many variations to try!  {I have three extra bags if you’re wanting one….let me know!}

Amish Friendship Bread Cinnamon Loaf Recipe
Do not use any type of metal spoon or bowl for mixing.
Do not refrigerate.
Batter will rise, bubble, and ferment … burp as needed.

Day 1 – receive the starter and do nothing
Day 2 – Mush the bag.
Day 3 – Mush the bag.
Day 4 – Mush the bag.
Day 5 – Mush the bag.
Day 6 – Add to the bag 1 cup each flour, sugar and milk. Mush the bag.
Day 7 – Mush the bag.
Day 8 – Mush the bag.
Day 9 – Mush the bag.
Day 10 – Follow these instructions:

1. Pour the entire contents of the bag into a non-metal bowl.
2. Add 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1 1/2 cups milk. Stir.
3. Measure one cup batter into four 1-gallon Ziploc bags {keep one bag and pass the three extras to friends along with a copy of the recipe.}
4. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
5. Add to the remaining batter:

3 eggs
1 cup oil
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 cup milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 cups flour
1 large box instant vanilla pudding (or any flavor)
1/2 tsp. salt

6. Pour mixture into a greased bundt pan and bake at 325 for 50 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Other options:
  • Grease 2 large loaf pans.  In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 cup sugar and 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon. Dust the greased pans with 1/2 of this mixture.  Pour the batter evenly into the 2 pans and sprinkle the remaining sugar mixture over the top.  Bake 1 hour. Cool the bread until it loosens evenly from the pan (about 10 minutes). Serve warm or cold.
  • Add 1 cup of the following or a combination not to exceed 1 cup: raisins, nuts, chocolate chips, or butterscotch morsels.
  • You may also substitute the vanilla pudding with butterscotch.

And if you don’t have an Amish Friendship Bread starter, you could always start one by following this recipe!

Amish Friendship Bread Starter
This is the Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipe if you’d like to treat your family and spread the love to some friends!  It is very important to use plastic or wooden utensils and plastic or glass containers when making this. Do not use metal.

Ingredients:
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110°F)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup warm milk (110°F)

Directions:
1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water for about 10 minutes. Stir well.
2. In a 2 quart glass or plastic container, combine 1 cup sifted flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly or the flour will get lumpy when you add the milk.
3. Slowly stir in warm milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Loosely cover the mixture with a lid or plastic wrap. The mixture will get bubbly. Consider this Day 1 of the cycle, or the day you receive the starter.

For the next 10 days handle starter according to the instructions above for Amish Friendship Bread.

I made several batches of friendship bread this summer. I had to stop because it was so good and I found myself eating too much. I like how you made your bread in a bundt pan. Very pretty!

  2. Mary says:

I have made Amish Friendship Bread before and it was so good. I never thought of the bundt pan either… but so pretty!

      I love the Friendship Bread.
The Bundt pan sounds like a great new way to prepare the bread.
I was wondering has anyone waited and extra day or two to prepare the bread for sharing and baking?
      Will this make a difference?
Someone let me know about this?
      Thanks

Lovely pictures. I never got into friendship bread. I got a bag of batter once and didn’t take care of it. I have enough to do already!

  4. Looks yummy. I’ve never had this before. I’ve heard about and have seen the bags get passed around, but I never got to partake. I think I’ll have to try this. Thanks for sharing.

I love this bread! I almost always have a starter in the freezer because it can only circle around to your friends but so many times. lol Thanks for giving me the idea of baking it in a bundt pan next time. :-)

    Amiee,
I love this yummy bread! However, once I get started…. we eat and eat and eat!
When I made it I would bake up a double batch, save my cup for starter and only throw a small bit away!

We had a friend give us a batch in November. When it was time to give out bags to friends we kept one for ourselves and froze it…and I just made that bread on Thursday. When I made that batch I did not add the 1 1/2 cups of flour, sugar, and milk so we did not have more to pass on to friends or keep…which is fine because we also love it too much!

  35. I love Amish Friendship Bread – yum! Though it’s dangerous stuff – LOL! I’ve never had it in a Bundt pan – so much prettier! Glad to see the recipe again – maybe I can time this right so I can take it to a church potluck and bring the starters with me.

  36. oh my word … looks delicious!

  37. Anonymous says:

Yes it is very good- more like cake than bread..Having a newborn son at the time,I admit, I failed a couple times getting my starter to the oven… but once I did- I never failed again-Because its that wonderful..Everybody loved it. Puts you in the mind of banana nut bread or zucchini bread. I’m so happy to find this recipe because I’m making start up cookbooks for my two girls with mommas recipes and I definately will be including this one. I Originally came in contact with it in the ’80s when my newborn son was my priority.-Back then it wasn’t so easy to find the start up recipe like it is now and some people would be anything but friendly, if u wasted a starter batch!LOL! So it makes u wonder – What is in that stuff?? LoL!

  39. Oh wow, I haven’t done this in forever!! Thanks for reminding me of a fun recipe! :)

  40. I had enjoyed this many times as a young girl growing up and actually only in the past couple months recalled how delightful it was. I would love a start if any one has any available. I live in Olympia, Washington USA. I actually bought the packaged yeast thinking I might try making my own but have yet to be confident enough to try it. Thank you and looking forward to tasting this again.

  41. Fun! We have been moving a lot over the last few years and I always like to bake things to get to know our neighbors better–what could be better than friendship bread? :) Thanks for the recipe. Pinned it.

It sounds wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

  43. mzkitn says:

this friendship bread is fantastic. one of my favorite ways to fix it was with pistachio pudding, and the chocolate chocolate chip is yummy! using banana pudding and pecans tastes as good as banana nut bread. I made so many of these is was crazy! Once I ran out of friends willing to take a batch, I was making 4 loaves at a time!! and then I’d freeze them. then my freezer died and I had no where to put them so I quit making any. Have been looking for a like-new freezer, if/when I find one I’ll have to make up some more! Thanks for reminding me of this wonderful goodie!

    • Whatever…that’s the best recipe EVER! So sad I didn’t do a good job keeping up with it! I need to see if my friend has another bag for me to give it a second go with! It was so good while it lasted…I need to do some experimenting now!!! Crossing my fingers you find the perfect freezer replacement soon! XO, Aimee

  44. Terra says:

I’m so glad that you posted this. I have been looking everywhere for the starter. I haven’t heard of anyone with it in such a long time. The last time I made Amish Friendship bread was back in 2006. Wow! I can’t wait to make some.

I was looking for a friendship bread recipe and this looks great. I’m 49,now, but remember my grandmother and her neighbors passing this around in their retirement complex in the 80′s. I think hers added a can of fruit-cocktail in the final phase before baking. It was great!. I was looking for this to make breakfast bread for my son at school…cinnamon is right up his alley.
    Thanks.

  46. Lisa says:

I love the friendship Bread. The Bundt pan idea sounds like a great new way to make the bread. I was wondering if any of you have ever wait a day or two longer to make the bread for sharing and baking? Will this make a difference to the bread?
    Thanks

    • Jennifer says:

Hi Lisa, an extra day or two won’t hurt a bit!

    • Jennifer says:

I just pulled a bundt pan full out of the oven! Thanks so much for the idea.
I didn’t have any instant pudding, so I mixed in some mashed up bananas. It smells incredible!
