Board and Batten DIY Possibilities

February 9, 2012 by 36 Comments

Do you absolutely LOVE the timeless classic look of board and batten wainscoting.  It’s amazing how many variations there are to this beloved wall trim.  Board and batten spans across many decorating styles: traditional, modern, romantic, eclectic…!  Every room makeover I’ve seen over the years with a board and batten addition seems to offer a unique flair that makes it extraordinarily special and unlike any other!  Some stretch to the ceiling, while others maintain a height midway up the wall.  My personal preference is when the wainscoting ends just above the midpoint!

Looking through the endless options in magazines, online and in
friend’s houses I’m always amazed that there’s no “right way” to design
it!  Know matter the span that separates each board, the look offers the
same amazing fresh and simplistic charm!  I love that not only is it
beautiful, with the addition of hooks, it can be a totally great storage
solution, too!  As I’ve looked through my house, I’ve decided that I’m
going to start with my entry and hope that the addition of board and
batten will too, offer my entry way the tremendous style found in these fabulous design inspirations!
I’m so excited to pull our our power tools and paint and transform our room!!

I’ll definitely be sharing the results with you as soon as it’s
complete!!!  Until then, enjoy and be inspired!!!  With so much
inspiration, I’m wondering if I’ll be adding it to rooms beyond our
entry before long!??!!  Do you have board and batten in your home?!?!
Which room!?!?  Was it very difficult!?!?  Do you LOVE it!?!?

I LOVE this look! I can’t wait to have a house of my own that I can try this with.

I really like this look, but I do get afraid that it will get dated as 2010-2015 or something! With that said, I always think we should do what ever we like in our houses and I am sure ANY of these styles will look great in your foyer! I am thinking about doing something similar behind my bed like in the picture above – I just will use the nailer and no glue in case I want to take it down :-)

    • Styles definitely do change!!! I’m all about nails, too! Glue may have similar nightmare issues that Wallpaper involve! YUCK! LOL! I’ll be excited to see your bed…LOVE that look LOTS!!! XO, Aimee

I love this look too, but am worried about it going out of style. Remember all of that horrible paneling in the 70′s and 80′s? Of course, it was usually an dark wood color.

I do have this in mind for my daughter’s room and bathroom, but I’d have to do new baseboards. Ours are so thin, like not even 1/4″ thick!

    • The good thing about paneling is it looks GREAT painted…I’m loving my 50s paneling! I even like those big overhanging beams when they’re painted…this house didn’t come with those though. I’m with you though, I totally wonder about changing styles! I wonder what we’ll do when painted furniture is outdated because goodness knows there’s TONS of it all over the blog world!

I’ll let you know how our little project goes! XO, Aimee

We added this treatment to the laundry room in our last house and just loved the result! I been talking with Wayne about adding some to one wall in the mudroom and the inspiration picture of the full wall treatment would work great in our bedroom,,,, oh to dream!

  7. I love the look. I’m excited to see how it turns out for you! Maybe we’ll use it somewhere in our yet-unfinished house. Mudroom? Living room? Oh, the possibilities!

  8. This is a great look. I thought of using beadboard in my half bath but the board-and-batten may be a thriftier option. I’m following you via Linky Followers. I hope you’ll follow back. Have a good weekend.

We did board & batten in our loft & I have LOVED it! I would do it all over my house if my husband was okay with it. :)

DUH! I’m looking all over for a comment area, hmmm finally figured out that it’s sweet notes instead! I have not done board and batten, but I do love the look. In our old house I had beadboard in the bathrooms and I ran it taller than chair rail height, and I absolutely loved it. So, I am a fan of the taller stuff.

  11. I so want that….Hopefully in my appartment in Lebanon I can do that, In the US we are renting :( I like also the victorian very ornate one with gold leaf the frame will be gold ( I dont know what they call it though:D )

  12. I do so love it…yes, I do! I want to put it everywhere, and as soon as it warms up, I’ma go skulk around some of these new constructions in our neighborhood for some freebies…

  21. Love,Love.Love this look! We recently did this in our bedroom and have left over (lots!)boards so am trying to decide which room will get done next. Thanks for sharing all these gorgeous applications!

  22. I have never tried board and batten but rather lean toward beadboard. I think both are very classic looks that can be used in any room. I have the beadboard in all my bathrooms at about four feet high. My only regret is that I didn’t have the ledging a little deeper to safely put pictures and knick knacks.
Out of all the photos you have shown, my favorite is the mudroom. That looks really, really cool!
Looking forward to seeing how your entry turns out.

  23. This is a beautiful look! I think you will love it wherever you use it, and the entry is a great place to start.!

  24. I LOVE all these ideas!!! I especially love that mud room! Beautiful!

  28. momto8 says:

    beautiful pictures!!

  29. Yep, I’m a big fan of wainscoting. We installed a grid-style wainscoting in our living room and dining room, and it’s made such a huge difference in the look & feel of the rooms. It wasn’t difficult to install, but it was a pain to paint!

Have fun transforming your entry – I’m sure you’ll love the result :-)

  30. Spunky Junky says:

without a doubt board and batten will be slathered all over the walls in our next house! I love all these ideas so much. FYI…I am featuring you in the morning on Spunky Junky!
