Oh no, I think I lied in my last post! I said that I was so glad to have found a house with cabinets that reach to the ceiling, a total of 46 inches of pure storage! I also mentioned that we were lucky to have found a 1950s home in our neighborhood with kitchen cabinets minus the fur down! We actually did have one little bitty drop cabinetry case above the kitchen sink that totally needed to go!
The scalloped valance and the light fixture, oh my gosh, I love vintage, but the light fixture was anything BUT a collector! It was a piece pure plastic ugliness!
Do you remember at our old house when we took down that huge florescent lighting box and we had no earthly idea what state we’d find the ceiling underneath…this gave us the same nervousness! I kept thinking oh my gosh, we’re going begin demo and a bunch of insulation is going to fall down and it’ll be all over! But I zipped my lips and didn’t say a thing because Stud was totally thinking I was crazy for wanting to tear it out and any negative talk was going to totally work against my cause of beautifying and updating my kitchen!!!
No worries, our oven BOOM experience totally reiterated the necessity of powering OFF electricity! Those wires were definitely not live! Basically the only art to this demo was pry and hammer, pry and hammer some more! Oh and don’t damage the cabinets on either side!!!
We got pretty close, but then the blinds needed to come out so we had more wiggle room. I think the hardest part of this job was the lack of space to move around and the sink made it extra cumbersome. Do you see in the picture below that the light fixture was mounted to those beams rather than coming through the ceiling…yep, another step to the process!
Above you can see that this window and the attic space above was very limited because of our peaked roof. Stud’s lungs were tightly squashed between the attic beams…leaving a huge bruise along his chest for a week! He had to wiggle on his belly to get into the tight space, switch out the electrical wires, cut a new hole, and then fish the electrical wires through to me as I stood on the counter straddling the sink underneath!
A splash of color did wonders, too!!! Doesn’t it look so much more modern than it’s original pic above!?! I’m pretty sure I have the most Studly hubby EVER and our two little boys are PURE CUTENESS!!! Something about boys…they’re all about touch they’re either hugging or tackling…I was raised in a family with four girls…I have to admit I prefer the hugging and cuddling, but I’ve learned by now…the tackling and wrestling is here to stay!!!
