Front Doors {Dark, Bright or Light}

April 2, 2012 by 39 Comments

On the road, I had a great conversation with my mother in law, one of my best friends.  She  spent her first eighteen years of life in Germany.  She married a navy guy {my father in law} and moved back to the states shortly after their wedding.  She has now spent a few more years living in the United States than years in Germany.  But she’s been back for visits {I went once, too} and her sister is still in Germany and they are great about not letting the miles separate them.  The other day her sister sent her a beautiful picture of a front door, which got us talking about the difference between doors in our area compared with doors in her hometown, Lutjenburg, Germany.

Between that conversation and my visit in the Northeast, which is so rich in culture and history, I’m inspired to give my door a little punch of color.  One of my favorite tours on this vacation, was our visit to Mount Vernon, George Washington’s estate.  I have a few pictures I’ll be posting soon about that visit.  Each room throughout the house has the original colors.  Back then, men decorated the houses, with exception to the master bedroom, which is decorated by the woman of the house.  Bold colors back than were a symbol of wealth and position.  Each room throughout the house had a vivid color on the walls, until Martha and George Washington’s house, where the bedroom had a very neutral wall color and almost a fog blue colored trim.  I’m most impressed, Martha had some great taste in color!

I’m now on the hunt for the perfect color of steel blue for my front door.  I mentioned wanting to accent my porch here.  I think a new color for my front door would fit perfectly.   I replaced my door with a fabulous find on Craigslist just a year ago and at the time chose Benjamin Moore Evening Sky color, an almost black color.  I’m ready to make my door more personal!

I just took the Front Door test on Blogthings.  Did you know that the color you choose to paint your door tells a bit about who you are!?  Leave me a note in the comments so I can learn a bit more about you!  And if your door is factory color…maybe it’s time to add a punch of color!

I’m totally ready to go to my favorite paint store and make a change…something light and airy!!!  I think I have a pretty good idea of the color I’ll be choosing.  My brick has an orangish hue and my trim desperately needs to be changed from the same orangish hue to a whiter tone soon.  I can’t wait to show you the color I’ll be using.

What color is your front door!?  Your the colors on the exterior of your house?  What’s your preference in a front door!??!  Bright, dark or light!?!?

LOVE LOVE LOVE the turquoise door with yellow floral accents!!! We are currently sporting a “vintage” 80′s cream colored door with beveled glass {note sarcasm!} We painted our first home door teal and I loved it!

  2. Ms. Redo says:

Such a good question. I have no answer. When we bought this house it had a red door (and the house is a very dull … beige?) Like you I got a new door off Craigslist, it has the fan windows on top which let light into our very dark foyer – but it’s stained natural color. Can you try to picture that on a very dull … beige? house?!?! I’ve got to do something, hand me a paint can, any color at this point will help!!! Ha, love the doors you showed, someone is bold enough to make a change, wish it were me. Mary

  3. LOVE those tall kelly green doors. Wondering if I could pull that off…probably not. :) My front was hunter green when we bought the house, then I painted it red and did a black glaze over it, and now it’s black!

  4. I would love to paint my front door a nice bright colour but hubby says no I did love the doors you have shared with us today…………

  5. Ok I was still typeing and somehow it went and published I was going to add not today since I am late getting here so I that is why you get two comments from me……..lol

  6. My front door is black. My house is soft coco with bright white trim, black door, black shutters. As much as I love aqua, lol, I am classic on the outside =)

  7. Mary Ellen says:

do you happen to show a picture of your front door from the outside. It seems like that might need to be taken in to consideration when choosing a color. Any color can look fantastic or terrible depending on it’s environment.
I have had white, green, turquoise, red….would love to try a yellow one someday but the outside of the houses we have had just don’t dictate that color.

    • Great idea! I’ll take one and post it here tomorrow. My trim will be painted soon and the brick is not my fave. But I’ve got some plans that will hopefully be a major improvement for the curb appeal. Thanks for your suggestion Mary Ellen!

  8. What a beautiful collection of doors. Great eye candy!

    Warmly, Michelle

  9. Oh boy, it’s just like the personality test I took at work “picky and particular and hard to live up to my standards”! And just because I chose the red door! Our door, window boxes, and shutters are cranberry on a cream colored stucco house. It was that way when we bought it and I’m kind of stuck with it. But I do love the pale turquoise and green doors featured in your post. Good luck!

    • LOL! That must be the results of the previous owner! Yeah, I’m dealing with a mess of colors myself! Hmm!!?!? I’m wondering if I could pull off color or not. I’m thinking lighter may be my best option rather than brighter.

  10. I took the test….
You are bold, brave, and easily excited.
You are passionate about what you believe.
And you’re never afraid to tell people exactly what you think.
You’re picky and particular. It’s sometimes hard to meet your standards.
    Obviously….red. Hahahaha! It’s so dead on….funny!

  11. Tam says:

I like the numbers on the doors – never would have thought of that.

  12. mommajoe says:

i’m not sure what it says about me but my front door is a bright turquoise and i love it!

  13. Jen says:

I was just getting ready to paint my front door white with the ORB hardware…I think I still will, but then you have to go and show all the beautiful colored doors… AHHHHH!!!! It is currently black but time for a change!

  14. I just painted our front door aqua blue! I like Feng Shui, where door colors are picked by the direction of the door…ours faces west, so metal colors and earth tomes are best-but this year water colors are a good choice too, so I went with the aqua blue.

    The result of the test?

    “You are intriguing and charming.
People are naturally drawn to you, even if they don’t know you.
You are calm and wise. You are a true leader.
You never feel isolated in a group. Somehow, you always belong”

This is funny because it is me to a T! Although the calm part is questionable, at times :)

A fun aside-your front door is the same exact one we have on our rental home in TX. It’s original to the home,( built in 1985) and it’s stained Ebony. I used a pale blue glass paint/tint to do the glass inserts while we lived there.

This was fun. Thanks for sharing it :)

  15. Maury Kilgo says:

My front door is red, which is something I’ve always wanted, but I haven’t liked it as much as a I thought I would! I have to take the red into consideration for everyhing! Wreaths, flowers…

Can’t wait to see what you choose!

  16. I love the sign to keep solicitors away!

  17. I discovered “Wythe Blue” about three years ago and STILL love it! It’s a perfect, clean, blue/gray shade. I’m seriously considering painting my front door this color now that I’ve seen how it looks on a front door. Thanks for sharing these inspiring photos! :)

  18. Jen Lossing says:

I just love this post. I also have a fondness for doors. They really are a homes first impression!

  19. Revi says:

I love great front doors, too! I’ve always been a fan of red ones, but I like it when they’re sort of an appetizer for what’s inside. Since my two front rooms that are visible from the front door, I’m changing my red to taupe. It will be the first time in a while I haven’t had red. Can’t wait to see what you pick!

  20. Beautiful front door pictures! Currently my front doors are red…but I am wanting a change. Just added a pretty blue bench to the front porch…and considering painting the front doors too!

I always get this way in spring…time to freshen things up!

  21. Jenna says:

I have glossy black french front doors, with red and clear stained glass inserts, and I love them. If the stained glass was a little more neutral, I would consider painting my doors a bright yellow or a fun turquoise.

  22. Mine are still factory and ugly! I’m wanting to paint them red! And I want to try to use ASCP on them! When you paint yours, can you please do a tutorial on exactly how? For some reason, after building the entire house, I am terrified to paint the door!! The test says red makes me a little picky and particular and it may be hard to meet my standards….mmmm…..

  23. Little Bit says:

I love this! Gorgeous doors!! I’m going to paint my house this year and my doors have been black…I have to take that test and see what that means about me… ha ha Little Bit

  24. Skye says:

What a great post! I love the turquoise doors!

  25. Art and Sand says:

I love all the doors you showed. Our door is a bright red Dutch door which absolutely pops against our white house with blue trim. It literally makes me smile when I arrive home from work each day. When the top is open, it means “we’re home, please drop in” and neighbors do!

  26. I painted our front door red last summer. We live in an old, white cottage with black shutters. Because we have a screen porch on the front of our house, you cannot really see the front door from the street. So I’m thinking about painting the screen door a funky shade of green to match some Adirondack chairs we have in the yard. Sounds a little weird, huh? It’s only paint!

  27. One of my “things to do” this weekend is to paint my front door. I had bought a dark brown, but have decided that I am going to have to go with a pale blue/green. We will see how it looks? Thanks for showing the great doors! Beautiful!

  28. dominique says:

I am a door fanatic! These are full of inspiration. I needed a little courage to step outside the box to give ours some new life. Thanks for showing off these doors! Gorgeous!

  29. Crystal says:

What a great little story, and it came at the perfect time! I am preparing to paint my original 1941 front door {still it’s original dark stain}, and I was leaning toward a mustard yellow. Now, I’ve started thinking about a blue…My shutters are paprika, and I accent in bronze {mailbox, numbers, light fixture, etc}. We’ll see what I decide, and I can’t wait to see your outcome!

  30. I’m actually in the process of painting my front door right now. I was hoping to get it done on the weekend, but it’s taking more coats that I thought and I ran out of paint. The new colour is Sherwin Williams Oceanside. It’s a dark turquoise/teal, and I love it! Our house exterior is white brick, so the front door is really the only way to add a hit of colour to the front of the house. I go for dark or bold colours on the foor, to make it really stand out. I’m not a fan of white front doors.

Have fun painting your door, and enjoy the change :-)

    Kelly

  31. We currently don’t really have a front door! Sad I know (previously owners re-routed it to the side). But one day I will have one again. Beautiful inspiration pictures. I think I like contrast. Dark/bright door with a light house or light pretty door with dark siding. The light teal/blue ones are my favorite!

  32. Sandy says:

How exciting! I painted my front door turquoise. The paint is from Benjamin Moore. Love it! My back door is painted ocean breeze.

  33. Theresa says:

What should I do with a door that’s set back further? All of these doors are flush with the front of the house or have some grand porch….I’m not that lucky. Been thinking a navy door would look nice but completely intensify the shadowy entrance.

  34. Love doors and you have some beautiful examples. I’ve actually wrote a post about the doors of Dubrovnik last year. What is it about doors that are so interesting?
