Sprouting Seeds Creatively {Gardening}

When I think of Spring…I think of sunshine, singing birds, and flowers!! If you have been planning on starting a garden this year, but need some simple ideas and tips to get it going…here is the perfect way to cheer on your little seedlings and allow your children to be totally involved with the process, too!
There are many ways to help seeds begin to sprout…sandwich seeds between two moist paper towels or wrap a seed in a moist paper towel and place it inside a plastic bag. My favorite way to sprout seeds is to use a extra large, transparent, disposable food-prep glove and place a damp cotton ball with a seed in each finger slot.
For the seeds to sprout, they need warmth in addition to moisture. To keep your seeds warm, lay them on a computer monitor or on top of your refrigerator to provide the perfect amount of heat. For our seeds, I prefer using our window as a light source. When using a window, you pay close attention because young plants will stretch to the light which will give them a weak stem AND because windows can sometimes offer temperatures that are too extreme. Personally, we’ve had great success using the sun as our light source, although we do monitor our seeds to ensure the new sprouts don’t seem stressed and we are quick to plant our seedlings in soil when they sprout! This process is so fascinating!
Depending on which seeds you are using, germination will usually begin within a few days to a week, they are ready for moist soil! {Smaller seeds that have sprouted can be laid on the surface. Larger seeds that have sprouted should be buried according to the directions on the package}.
If you don’t have plans for Mother’s Day, make a memory and begin sprouting seeds
with your child, they’ll love being included in the process and it’s a gift that keeps on giving!*Check your seed pack directions:
Seeds can vary in their preference: light, dark, and some even need to be frozen!
