Keep a Duvet from Shifting in its Cover

I now know how to Keep a Duvet from Shifting in its Cover! After years of obsessing over quilts, my loyalty has taken a new turn! I preferred quilts, mainly because we are a ‘make your bed every day’ family and quilts seem to be an easy fix! Why my new love for duvets!?! Because I now know how to keep a duvet from shifting in its cover! Yesterday I told you about my latest purchase, fabulous Designer Bedding, Knockoff Price…here is why I’m loving it!
Sets have definitely improved since my last duvet purchase. Sets in all price points are offering this simple solution, but if you have an ancient set at home that you want to still get some life out of, this would be an easy addition to any duvet.
On this particular set that I purchased for my boy’s bedroom, after falling in love with these inspiration neutral boy bedrooms, the inside of the cover has two strings sewn into ever corner. And on the duvet that I purchased at the same time, there’s a loop on every corner. Makes perfect sense, right!
A simple task of securing the strings to the loops on all four corners {I believe the king size has 6-8 ties} with a bow is all it takes to keep the duvet from creeping to the bottom of the duvet every few hours! If you’re anything like me, you’re totally wondering if that really works!?? I’m telling you, my boys can sleep sideways, upside down, or with their heads hanging over the side and this duvet is staying put. I haven’t had to do a mighty shake on either duvet for a solid week…and the boys are able to make their beds no problem! If at some point I have to open the duvet and retie some bows, I’m still counting this as a total success.
And I’m unbelievably thrilled by how much this bold duvet has added to the boys’ bedroom already! I have their canvas finished, now just a couple more touches of decor and organization to complete. I’ll definitely give you the scoop along the way!

Yes, our daughter’s both have duvets with the loops. Makes a huge difference!!
You just solved a riddle for me. Why my pottery barn duvet has these weird little strings on it.
HA! Now I just wish my duvet had the loops!:(
you can hand stitch loops on the edge of your duvet- you can use bias tape (from fabric store or even Walmart) or even some extra fabric that you salvage from something else…no one will see it
Hope this helps!
My duvet didn’t come with those ties (I wish it had!) but we purchased little clips for the corners and they work well for keeping the blanket from slipping down!
Okay I have a duvet cover and it drives me crazy because I’m left w.duvet and no comforter by my head..I like to be cuddled up in my sheets! I mess w it constantly but it never stays. I’m always thinking of ways to make it work. This seems amazing if only it was available w my current bedding. How on earth did you get so lucky?
I so wish my current art had this
I wonder if you could turn both the duvet and cover inside out and sew a tie on one and a loop on the other?!?! It wouldn’t have to be pretty! XO, Aimee
You could use heavy gross grain ribbon and just stitch several..3 or 4 to the inside of the duvet at top and bottom and the same on the comforter itself. I am going to make some duvet covers and use snap tape..the kind that you can sew into the inseam of baby clothes for changing a diaper. I won’t do the whole length due to cost, but it would totally work to sew a few snap sets along the top and bottom!
That is a definite, “why didn’t I think of that?” moment.
Totally brill!!
Girl, you’ve got me running to my bedroom to see if my duvet has strings. Brilliant!! Thanks for the tip.
PS. LOVE the navy stripe. Makes me want a little boy…
ps. pinned!
Been having an “affair ” with safety pins in the corners! NOT ANY MORE! Am planning on making a new diver cover and am going to incorporate ties and loops. Thanks, Aimee, for sharing!
Now do you have a trick for keeping the duvet on the bed? My boys sleep under duvets and they are always on the floor in the morning. But, then again, so was any other covers we ever tried!
LOL…That’s some deep sleep! Wish we could sleep that sound, right! XO Aimee
Wonder if I could apply this concept to keep my grundies from shifting in their cover!
~Bliss~
This is great! I’ve avoided duvets for years because I always hated how they shifted. My bedcovering world has opened wider now
I love duvets! =)
I remember when I discovered this and was smacking myself in the head for not figuring it out sooner! I had always wondered why my duvet had little strings in it
And I started a new link party and would love to have you link up your ideas! You have so many of them! I’m trying to help keep older content alive so you can share anything! http://www.hubbymademe.com/throwback-thursday-no-1/
Can I ask what plugin are you using for your recent posts in your sidebar? I haven’t found one that cooperates with me yet
I decided I didn’t like that one with the words across it.
Hi Aimee: My first time to your blog, and what a clever idea–thank you for sharing it with us!
Hmmm…I did this with our duvet and it still shifts, but it’s down so I’m wondering if it’s the stinking down shifting because the blanket remains in place. The weird thing is that it doesn’t shift when it’s outside the cover. *sigh*
Ugh! Bedding can be such a bug! I’m trying to find bedding for my little girl’s room and trying three different sets on her bed wore me out today!
Wish I had help for your shifting down blanket!!! XO, Aimee
Wow- I have always wondered that…thanks for the tip!
Stopping by from tt&j link party
I used a duvet cover to re-purpose my daughter’s old “girly” comforter for my son’s room. Since it was a regular comforter, not a duvet, there weren’t any loops in the corners. I still used the strings from the duvet cover and just tied them tightly around a little bit of the corner of the comforter. It worked great. So even if you don’t have the loops, you can still use the strings.
