New Living Room Pillows

August 20, 2012 by 29 Comments

Although we’ve spent lots of time chatting about the boys bedroom, I’ve been shopping and playing in other areas as well.  I don’t think you and I have chatted about my front room in months.  I’ve been asked by a few readers about my favorite stores and catalogs.  To answer that question, I recently updated my ‘about me’ on the sidebar to read, ‘I love simple, functional decor, the use of natural fibers combined with high quality pieces…!’  That about sums it up: I love a blend of super nice furniture, one of a kind thrifty finds, and some handmade touches!  What about you?!!  (Keep reading and I’ll show you my newest little treasure, aka thrifty find).

While browsing West Elm the other day, I saw this gorgeous wall art.  My heart skipped a beat because Recycled Decor has a way of doing that sort of a thing to me!  Every room needs an element of life…check!

While at West Elm, I picked up a couple of 100% silk retro ikat pillows to mix with what I already had from Target and Ikea.  The mix of textures and simple patterns relaxes me.  Between my two Dolce Chairs (story about those, here), I have this super special table where I’ve placed a fun TJMaxx vase with spray painted branches from my backyard, a few of my favorite catalogs and a piece of coral.

Although this is our “formal” living room, I love that my super comfy decor draws us to chill in here often!  Remember what I store in the ottoman (here)…that lures me here, too!

I see these fuzzy pillows everywhere…there’s a gorgeous yellow one at Anthropologie that I stalked for awhile.  The gray one is from Target (my kids all claim it as their own).  The silk pillows are from West Elm.  The Henny Rand Cover, Embroidered with yarn in different colors, is from IKEA.  And the little gold pillow is from Target as well.  Since we’re friends, I’ll also let you know that up until a couple weeks ago, a year had passed since I laundered my Ikea Ektorp sofa cover!  I couldn’t believe how new it looked…and it took me all of an hour from start to finish!  I love that the slipcover and couch have velcro where they meet along the whole length of the back rest, behind the pillows.  Genius!  If you’re super skilled and make your own slipcovers, this is a ‘must have’ feature!

I told you my special treasure was going to be saved for the end…here it is!  I went to my favorite little thrift store and off the truck was this gorgeous table…still waiting to be carried into the store.  The owner’s husband is so sweet and when I inquired about the price, he told me, ‘You do know this is an Ethan Allen, right?’  Smiling, I nodded.  He winked and told me to take it for $30!  Sold!  I’ve dreamed in it lots of different colors, but for now, it’ll have to wait.  My sweet mother-in-law always helps me keep life in perspective (do have a blessing like that in your life?).  By her recommendation, I’m working to wrap up what I’ve started before I take on too much more!  Wise, right!

Over the next few months, in addition to Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas updates…I’ll be sharing the boys room reveal, the pillows I’ve decided on for my family room, simple tips on constructing a built-in bookshelf, and then we’ll start hanging art all over the place…I have some fun ideas stirring in this little mind of mine that has lots of trouble shutting off…relate much!?!  I’m ready to start making those ideas functional!  So what about you?  What’s your favorite style!!?  I’d love to know more about my readers!!

  3. Your room is very pretty, and the table is a great buy. I need intervention from your mil, as I too have way too many projects started. I have been a bit better lately at finishing a few. Our home style is definitely comfortable, a bit rustic and farmhouse but mostly what I can afford :)

Your home is just dreamy!! I’m still trying to find my style, but I adore round shaped tables, especially pedestal. Ooh, and I love white fur and wood.

Do you like your Ikea Ektorp couch? How often do you use it and how long have you had it? I am thinking of getting one but we use it all the time. Not sure how it would last. Also, when you wash the slipcover does it wrinkle?

    Thank you!

    • Aimee says:

Hi Seanna! We do like our Ektorp. I bought it from CraigsList from a graduate student who had never really sat on it because she was always studying at her desk. We’ve owned it for about two years now. We use it probably an hour a day…my kids play in there with their grimy hands & feet and my dog likes to rub on it from time to time. It cleans up nicely in the washing machine…but it does come out of the dryer with wrinkles. I usually use some downy wrinkle release on it and then use my hands to press out the big wrinkles….I always mean to take it out of the dryer immediately, but real life seems to get in the way. It’s not as comfortable as my family room couch, but it definitely has a great look and I really do like it lots. Thanks for asking! XO, Aimee

Your mix of pillows looks terrific. I love to mix fabrics and textures all up on one room. That’s sort of my style. I just buy what I like and somehow make it work. I’d love to steal your ottoman. :o )

  22. I absolutely love the ikat on your pillows – such a soothing combination of colors! And that’s a fantastic deal on an Ethan Allen piece. Very pretty. :)

Stopping by from Feature Friday Free-For-All. :)

As usual, such gorgeousness is on your blog that I want to “pin” everything! You totally scored with your new coffee table. Great eye! I wanted to tell you a funny story about our Ethan Allen store where I live. They moved out and guess what moved in? Goodwill. Ethan Allen building becomes a Goodwill? Is that a sign of the times or what??? Have a wonderful Sunday, jules

  24. I love your sense of style! I will go shopping with you anytime! :)
