Simple TIps: Chopping Onions
August 5, 2012 by Aimee • 37 Comments
I love simple tips! Tonight for dinner, we’re having Orange Roughy, rice, and some veggies. While chopping some onions to flavor the rice, I remembered a tip from long ago. Chewing a piece of gum while chopping onions keeps the tears from flowing, works like a charm every time!!! Spare your mascara and give it a try!
What are your favorite Simple Tips!?!

I’m going to have to try your tip because I make the hubby chop all the onions in this house
Thank you, Aimee! You always have the best parties. Have a great weekend!
Hugs,

I’ve never heard that trick about chewing gum – I’m totally giving this a try! Thanks so much for hosting Aimee! Hope you’re having a super fabulous weekend!
The trick I have always heard it to hold a matchstick or toothpick in your mouth. I think the reason onions make you cry is something about when the fumes get in your mouth, so anything to remind you to just keep your mouth shut (gum too!) should work! Thanks so much for hosting this week!
Thanks for hosting my beautiful friend!! xoxo

Hi Aimee – I have never tried this trick for onion-crying. I learned years ago that the trick is to cut an onion from the stem end only. I peel the onion and then cut from the top stem end to the bottom root end. Try it! Cut off the stem end and then take a deep whiff of your onion – nothing. Has always worked for me. Good luck!
Wow, what a great tip! I have never heard this before! Definitely going to stash some gum in my kitchen!
