Ready for another Dreamy Dwelling Home Tour! Gwen from The Makerista has a home that is filled to the brim with Design Inspiration — you’re going to love it! She lives with her handy husband, Micah, and their two lively children: Xander(3) and Milly(1) — aren’t they precious! Check out their amazing home!
My husband purchased our home when we were dating, but I was living in New York at the time and did not see it (a picture or anything) until he had already moved in. While it is in a suburban, cookie-cutter neighborhood, I feel like we have really made it our own! The house was very builder-grade, and included lots of themed wallpaper – everything from birdhouses to American flags! We tore down a wall, replaced all the flooring, painted all the cabinets and walls and upgraded all of the trim. I have thoroughly enjoyed the process of making it our home: decorating, building, designing, thrifting, and I love the challenge of doing it all on a tight budget!
Even though we have a 3 and a 1 year old, I often hear that the main areas of our home don’t necessarily reflect that. The kids have lots of toys, we just keep them corralled in baskets and bins. It’s been good for them to learn to put things away and it keeps me somewhat sane not looking at plastic things all day long.
I really enjoy a home that feels personal, and I hope mine exudes that. I have filled it with mementos from family and moments in my life, thrifted pieces, fun DIY projects and steals n’ deals from discount stores.
If you can’t tell already, I have a thing for plants. About once a week I come home with something and my husband just gives me an eye roll at this point. He’s afraid we’ll be living in a jungle sooner than later, but I just love the life they bring to a space!
Our bedroom is the room I am currently working on. I say “currently working on” very loosely. I really believe in taking your time when decorating. I think the best spaces are often the ones that come together over time, and I’ve learned that being patient and waiting for things that you really love instead of settling for things that are OK in the moment always pays off.
My daughter’s nursery is filled with pictures of her grandmothers. I love the idea of her being surrounded by the strong women who have come before her. You can read more about the room’s details and sourcing here.
I just recently finished making this shield above Xander’s bed out of some plywood and a $.99 thrift store find. It adds some whimsy to the space, yet is still a very grown up idea. I love the fact that even adults enjoy hanging out in our children’s rooms. They are light and bright, but pack a lot of personality at the same time. And the basic elements of the space are not too juvenile, giving them the chance to last well past their baby years.
I loved getting the chance to share some of my DIY Modern home with you today! I hope you will join me as I continue to spruce up some other areas (our master bath is calling my name!) and while making a home is up there on my list, I love making all sorts of things: from invitations to parties and more! I hope you will follow along as we continue the basement finishing, including a playroom, kitchenette, bathroom, and home gym at The Makerista — I’m definitely following you Gwen!
