Don’t you just LOVE a Dreamy Dwelling House Tour!  Kelly and her hubby, Andy from View Along the Way bought a ‘fixer-upper nasty ol’ foreclosure about five years ago, and it’s been a work in progress ever since.’  They still have rooms that have barely been touched, and even the rooms that are “finished” are not safe from some changes she has in mind!  You’re going to love all of Kelly’s Home Improvements – House Tour.  Here’s a little sneak peek — you may have seen this in this month’s addition of Better Homes & Garden Magazine!!!

Take it away Kelly — This was our foyer and entry when we bought our house, but we ripped out the carpet and installed hardwood floors (on our own… it took us SIX MONTHS!) Then we stained the stair railing and added iron balusters.

(The chihuahua was not included with the purchase.)

We left the front office empty and unused until JUST last year, when we had to switch some rooms around to make space for a tiny new member of our family. We took out the old nasty carpet, cleaned it with new hardwoods and new windows, removed the popcorn ceilings…

Then we installed a DIY bookshelf wall, made our own capiz chandelier, and finally put that room to work for us as an office!

The living room was a relatively simple fix. Out with the popcorn ceilings and the yucky floor, in with fresh paint, some DIY striped curtains and furniture. (This room is SUCH a work in progress right now! I have lots of plans for it!)

You can see the little breakfast nook there behind the sofa… I added a plate wall installation that wraps around that corner. Since I took these first photos, I also added some DIY Greek key curtains.

Our half bathroom was more than a little unpleasant! Among other things, the toilet wasn’t screwed into the floor securely, the cabinet was broken and the floors were stained and dirty. We gutted it just as soon as we could, and added new floors, subtle pearlescent stripes on the wall and this killer mirrored vanity we found for a steal. (One common thread in my home and in my blog is finding ways to create a happy home with a teeny tiny budget!)

The dining room had a base layer of the sticky residue from old wallpaper when we bought, which was delightful to remove. (ha!) But remove it we did, added new moldings and painted everything.

And here’s our sweet baby girl’s nursery. We installed crown molding and the front-facing bookshelf wall. I sewed the curtains and added the pinwheel art and the little DIY turquoise chandelier. This room was a major project-on-a-budget! The total for everything, including ALL the furniture, came in at under $500.

Our master bedroom is just at the beginning stages of getting decorated! (There’s still a bare bulb hanging from the ceiling… after five years!) In addition to all our standard changes – new floors, windows, removing popcorn ceilings, etc – we added crown molding to the tray ceilings, built the upholstered bed and sewed the curtains. (SO much more to come in here, eventually!)

Finally, our latest whole-room transformation was our laundry room. It just wasn’t functional for us, with only the wire shelf for storage, and the floor which we could just never get to look clean no matter how much we tried!

We actually painted the linoleum floors, stenciled the back wall, added a $20 cabinet from a yard sale and shelves from scrap wood, installed that amazing light fixture that my talented husband made, and added the drying rack. It’s a million times more functional now and has made doing laundry much more enjoyable! The whole makeover cost us $157!

IO contributor Anu from Nalle’s House is here to share another tip for creating a Handmade Home!  It’s easy to draw a complete blank when it comes to decorating shelves and mantels.  As my sister says, ‘it’s as if my house is mocking me.’  I love this awesome tutorial for creating wood bowl art!  It’s a great solution for adding some interest and a little bling to your space.

I love to use objects in ways that they weren’t necessarily intended to be used.  So when I found a nice square-shaped bowl that was a little beat up I knew I could paint it.  I chose to go with a light shade of mint (my current colour crush) with some gold confetti for a little bling.  I love how leaving the wood edges exposed gives it some character.

To paint my bowl, I taped off the edges using painter’s tape (I had to overlap small pieces of tape for the round corners).  I then applied two coats of both primer and latex paint in a shade of mint.  Little Pilot (my 2 year-old) was very excited to help me paint.

Once the mint base colour was all dry, I was ready to add my gold confetti dots.  I used Martha Stewart craft paint in gold and the eraser end of a pencil.  I simply dabbed my eraser in the gold paint and dotted the bowl in a random pattern.  I tried overlapping some dots and decreasing the amount of dots as I went out from the corner to get a scattered look.

In the end I had some unexpected art in my favourite mint and gold combination!

Don’t you just love this Handmade Home Idea!  This art can also be used for it’s original purpose as a bowl.  I would just recommend sealing your paint job first with a poly or acrylic sealer.  You could also get a completely different look by painting your bowl a different colour or pattern (e.g., chevron, polka dots, a monogram, etc.). After a busy day like today — an early playoff baseball game (big win for Big B and Baby B), brunch with one of my forever friends who came to town for her daughter’s gymnastics competition, some of our favorite family friends stopping by for a little visit, a quick run through the house to straighten up, a trip to the grocery store, then an evening bbq & pool party with one of my boy’s All Star teams — I totally dig a brief moment by myself chilling on the back patio with a magazine!

Welcome to Share Your Creativity!  I hope your week has been great — yesterday was field day for Little B!  She took first in her heat for the 50M, 100M, and 400M Relay — I was one proud mommy!   It’s amazing to me that the school year is wrapping up!  It has been a year of all kinds of firsts — four years of homeschooling followed by a year of public school — just about everything has been new!  My first and foremost emotion is gratitude for how well my sweeties adjusted to what could have been out of control crazy for them!  God has definitely surpassed all my hopes and prayers!  Below are a couple links to projects and recipes shared on It’s Overflowing this week.

Don’t you just LOVE a Dreamy Dwelling House Tour!   We stumbled on this house through a friend looking in the same area and totally fell in love!  It had just come on the market.  Instead of seeming hasty, we waited a week — too late!  I was so bummed to not get the chance to make this home my own!  Take a look around!

Doesn’t the curb appeal totally make you squeal!?!  I love those dormer windows and the long pathway up to the front door.  This is a 3200 square foot, 4 bedroom – plus office, 3 1/2 bathroom home filled with serious beauty!  Check out that crown molding, you could trip over all the molding in this home it’s so thick.  And the plantation shutters throughout — totally dreamy!

The symmetry in this home had me smitten from my first step inside — such a gorgeous entry!

I’m still dreaming about this light fixture — gorgeous!

And check out this feature, not only is the family room cozy and unique with awesome wood trim and beautiful wood floors, it has doors that close it off from the front of the house so you can actually live in this space and were someone to stop by, no big deal!

I love a family room that opens up to the kitchen!  All those windows!  Did I mention the plantation blinds already!?!

The stove top and dishwasher both need to be replaced, but the double oven and fridge were updated and ready for some serious cooking!  I love the placement of her plates and sweet succulent plants!   And my kids each took a seat at the breakfast bar to demonstrate how made for our family this house was!

The door below opens up to a shady backyard with a painted deck for entertaining outdoors!  (Another gorgeous chandelier).

In the picture above, the cabinet on the far right is the pantry.  Beyond the pantry is the hallway to the garage, laundry room, and office with full bathroom.

I’m not sure what I would do with all of this laundry room storage, but I have no doubt I would have put it to good use!  And a sink for working on stains and crafts!?!?  LOVE!  This door leads to the side of the yard, right by the three car garage driveway.  I pictured my kids playing basketball out there for years to come!

At the front of the house, just beyond the laundry room was the office.  It was a cozy space that I had already pictured as the perfect spot to keep my creative juices flowing!  Just beyond the window are two beautiful homes and between the homes is a little creek that runs into a park that stretches for what seems to be forever — peaceful!  Upstairs led to a little landing opening to all of the bedrooms.

Here’s the master suite.  All the colors throughout this home are totally my style.  Love the window treatment, too.  Side note:  How many of you still sleep on a Full Sized Bed!?!

I wasn’t totally digging the bathroom, but a little counter top flip and work on the shower — good as new!  The door below is the toilet room, and the storage closet was equivalent to a large dresser.  Just beyond the built-in was a closet that stretched over a good portion of the three car garage — HUGE!

In this house, I would have given each of the boys their own room.  This would have been Big B’s room.  I was picturing a bed similar to the one pictured, but with a trundle underneath for when he had friends over.  I love the dormer window here — Stud would have definitely made a cool window seat!

This would have been Baby B’s room and I would have given him our bunk beds and worked on making a trundle for under the bunks so all three of my sweeties could sleep together if we ever had a family staying with us — or if they were just in the mood for switching things up for a night!.

One side of the bathroom opened to the hallway so the boys could get to it easily.  As you walked through the shower and toilet area, you reached another room with a separate sink and mirror for Little B – Jack and Jill concept.  See the ‘B’ below!  I was so convinced it was meant to be!

Sweet room, right!  Little B had already moved in her furniture in her mind!

And here’s the backyard, such a fun fence, right!  Do you see what our biggest concern was with this house!?!?  The wood shingled roof!  This is the reason we waited initially, hoping for a better stance for negotiating.

The fully bricked exterior on such a beautiful lot of tall trees and tranquility was really hard to let go of, but thankfully I was busy in KY when I got the news and didn’t have many moments to sit and ponder it.

I’m trusting there will be another home on a quiet shandy corner.  A home rich with elegant beauty, designer touches, and soft simple lines!  I’ve been spoiled with my hardwood floors and totally hope that my next house will have the same!

Check out our new bathroom update — DIY Built In to Replace the Gas Bathroom Heater!  This has been such a funny month or two for our family!  The day following my return home from spending time with my sister in KY, Stud accepted a job that he had interviewed for 8 times!  The process had drained me to the point, I pretty much blocked it out.  When I heard the news I was totally stoked!  Without getting into controversial talk, healthcare reform is eliminating lots of products from being covered by medicare which beginning June 1, will affect a lot of jobs in my hubby’s industry.

Changing companies before we were restructured out of a job is such a relief (we’ve been through the alternative and it stinks).  This is a huge answer to prayer for our family and I’m so stinking proud of Stud — every interview concluded with him being told they were impressed by his ‘sense of presence.’  All that to say, with a job change also came a little extra time off!  We’ve been working through projects around the house — now if I can just share them on the blog!

Right when we moved in, we hired someone from Craigslist to remove our gas heaters in the bathrooms (they were already disconnected).  The guy who picked these up was also supposed to dispose of a large load of sheet rock and paneling, too.  Craziest thing!   He came in, grabbed the wall units, and — ran out of the house — jumped in his truck — and left!  I’m telling you there must be some good money in recycling metal!  Every since we’ve had a total eye sore in the bathroom.

We would love to remodel this bathroom, but everything works perfectly so it’s really hard to talk ourselves into forking over the big bucks!  So for now, we went with a DIY Built In — in the kid’s bathroom!  We cut a piece of wood out that fit the opening in the back, and four pieces for the sides.  Using the air compressor and brad gun, we secured the back and sides to the opening — five minute job!  Then we got busy caulking!

For the trim, we started with the top piece.  The shorter portion along the top needed to be 11.25″ so we drew a line at that point on our trim.  Then using a little trim box, we cut from the line — out at a 45 degree angle on both sides.  We repeated this for each piece of trim, measuring the smaller side and then cutting out at a 45 degree angle on both sides, each time.  The trim was secured with our brad gun.

With the box built, we cut a dowel a little longer than the opening in the trim.  Using a small drill bit, followed by a larger drill bit, we cut a hole that would allow the dowel to be inserted into one side, then into the other side.  We used wood glue to secure the dowels.  Berkeley took off with the portion of the dowel we didn’t need and ran to her favorite spot in the house — Little B’s faux fur rug from IKEA.

And now, to finish off the girly bathroom, I need to find a white valance.  I was shocked that Target didn’t have any in their inventory!  The gray is fine, but I think I’m going to hunt for white and put this one in the master bath!  This bathroom is screaming girly — I’ll let it reach it’s full potential with a white valance!
